| Anti-Prop 8 Demonstration - Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 15, 2008 |
In the year 2000, California voters overwhelmingly supported Proposition 22 by a margin of 61.4% to 38.6%. The text of Prop 22 stated: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
On Feb 12th 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom issued a directive to the San Francisco city-county clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples in defiance of California State law. Over the next 30 days approximately 4000 same sex marriage licenses were issued in the city before the California Supreme Court finally intervened. All the licenses issued during this period were voided.
In Spring of 2008, the same court ruled that Prop 22 violated the California State Constitution and declared that same sex marriage to be a fundamental right. In response to this ruling Proposition 8 was drafted to amend the State Constitution by adding the words: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
The California Supreme Court also refused to put a moratorium on the issuing of marriage licenses to same sex couples during the intervening months before the election, and so, for nearly 6 months in 2008, California issued thousands of marriage licenses to same sex couples.
On Nov. 4th 2008, Prop 8 was passed by a margin of 52.5 % to 47.5%, approximately the same margin by which Barack Obama won the Presidential election.
On Nov. 5th, 2008 three separate lawsuits were filed, challenging the validity of Prop 8.
There have also been numerous demonstrations against the passage of Prop 8, the first of which started spontaneously in the streets of West Hollywood on the night of the election. There have also been demonstrations in front of the Mormon Temple in West L.A., and even outside of the well-known and popular El Coyote restaurant because one of the restaurant's managers (an older woman who is Mormon) gave a personal donation of $100.00 to the Yes on 8 campaign.
On Saturday Nov. 15th, anti-Proposition 8 demonstrations were scheduled to be held in cities across California and so I dusted off my camera and took the Metro train down town to the Los Angeles City Civic Center to document the rally.
Here is what I saw… |

| There were a handful of counter protesters - perhaps 4 or 5 - holding large signs that were intended to offend and provoke the anti-Prop 8 demonstrators. I have seen these same counter protestors at anti-war demonstrations and, frankly, they are quite disturbed individuals, especially the fat fellow with the "Homo Sex is Sin" banner. |

| Eventually someone showed up with a sign featuring a large swastika and an arrow and stood next to them. |
| The police waited nearby. |

| At one point someone unfurled a rainbow flag from a ledge near the top of the LA City Hall tower. |

| Many of the signs quoted Martin Luther King Jr. or attempted to equate the struggle to redefine marriage with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's. |

| And just like every other protest which I've attended, there were people holding signs comparing those on the other side of the issue to Nazis. |
| As I walked through the crowd, I randomly took pictures of people and their signs. Some were persuasive, some were angry, some were rude, some were funny, and some were just plain bizarre. |

| The crowd was bigger than any of the anti-war protests that I have attended in the past. The LAPD estimated that there were approximately 13,000 people in attendance. |

| Way too wordy… |
| The chickens are in reference to California's Prop 2 which promoted more humane standards for confining farm animals, including chickens… and which was passed by the voters on the same night that Prop 8 was passed. |
